"The Prophet", Beit Ticho, Israel Museum, June 2016
A series of etchings take place within various drawings by Anna Ticho of Jerusalem and its surroundings. In her drawings there is no trace left of the people that inhabited them. I used her drawings as a backdrop of ruin for the vandalist activities, destruction and racial violence that has occurred in Jerusalem over the past years. The urge to violate Jerusalem is an inseparable part of its holiness, and makes it the tragic Jerusalem of ending and death.
Etching is an archaic medium, and its archaism is also its strength, even if only thanks to the rich past it leans upon. Art history is rife with artists for whom etching was the medium of choice for morbid subjects and narrative illustration.
The medium of etching allowed me to combine hand touch, direct and laborious, with a mechanical process that separates the final result from its source.
